Lionel Messi Has Been Talking About Life After Barcelona

43

Every once in a while, Lionel Messi’s future at Barcelona is brought into question, with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City linked with a move worth north of £250 million for the five time Ballon d’Or winner. Of course, nothing ever comes of these rumours outside of an extended and improved contract for the diminutive Argentine but there is one other club other than Barca that he is aiming to play for before calling time on his career.

Long before he was being referred to as the GOAT, Messi was on the books of Newell’s Old Boys in his hometown of Rosario and it is with Newell’s that Messi wishes to see out his career, if possible.

However, despite Messi’s wishes to return to Newell’s, it may not be so easy for the 30-year-old to negotiate a second spell with the Rosario club, as he explained in a recent interview.

“I still have to play in Newel’s and that is my dream but, as I was saying recently, I do not know what will happen a few years from now or how I will be to come back.

“I would love it and I always said it but I hope I can continue at this level to get back to Newell’s because it’s what I dreamed since I was little”.

Of course, Newell’s would never be able to afford the transfer fee or wages usually associated with a player of Messi’s prestige, so any return to Argentina would likely come at the end of Messi’s last contract with Barca and would probably see the iconic number 10 accept a heavily reduced weekly wage in order to fulfil his destiny of returning to his boyhood club.

The pint sized genius has started the current season in exhilarating form, scoring 16 goals in his opening 17 games, helping to fire Barca to the top of La Liga, four points clear of second placed Valencia and eight points clear of current Spanish and European champions Real Madrid, who occupy third position in the table after an indifferent start to their 2017/18 campaign.

Will Messi ever get the chance to return to Newell’s or will his dream move never come to fruition?
